Public investment in the logistics industry
In the last blog, the topic of
foreign investment in Mexico in
logistics was discussed, which presents a growth due to various factors, representing an important business opportunity for the country.
Regardless of the geographical location, having logistics points of proven value for the sector or the effect of the Nearshore; something that we must not miss is the investment by the Government to provide the necessary logistics infrastructure required by industry participants and can carry out their processes.
Logistics overview
In our country as in others, the road sector is where you can mostly see the public investment that contributes to the logistics industry. In Mexico there are 370 thousand kilometers of roads, which allow the interconnectivity of the country, within that vital infrastructure it has been possible to identify
14 corridors
that communicate to all the state capitals as well as various important points ranging from ports to borders.

Always in the land section there is also the Mexican Railway System that is made up of 26 thousand 727 km of railways. Currently, they are concessioned to private consortiums for their operation 17 thousand 799 km in 3 main trunks and 3 short lines, as well as the Railway Terminal of the Valley of Mexico, to a mixed capital company, where the federal government participates with 25% of the shares. For its part, the 222 km of the line of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec are administered by the federal government.
In the maritime section, the main port facilities that carry out commercial activities in the 5 continents and contribute more than 95% of the containerized cargo tonnage are the ports of Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas in the Pacific, and those of Veracruz and Altamira in the Gulf. with them Mexico carries out its international exchange.
On the other hand, the Mexican airport system is made up of 85 airports, 1,385 civil aerodromes, since 1998 34 of the main Mexican airports are concessioned to private groups, being integrated the system of 85 facilities and divided as follows:
- 12 assigned to the Pacific Airport Group (GAP).
- 13 to grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte (OMA) and
- 9 to Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR).
- 24 are administered by ASA and,
- 27 in charge of the Secretariats of National Defense and Navy, as well as various state and municipal governments.
All of the above gives us a better picture of the country’s situation in terms of infrastructure, which supports Mexico becoming a benchmark in terms of international logistics.
This year alone, the government will invest
four billion dollars
in 25 port projects that will give an installed capacity of 500 thousand tons. This is not the work of chance or political movements but are part of the Investment Program in Transport and Communications Infrastructure that are being developed since 2013 where the
The vision
is to “promote the development of advanced logistics that provides connectivity to the centers that will integrate the new National System of Logistics Platforms and allows the development of logistics parks and intermodal inland ports with new modalities of strategic fiscal enclosures that add value to goods.”
Seeking the reduction of costs and times in the transfer of people and goods through the construction and modernization of 17 thousand km of highways, roads and rural roads that connect the 32 states and the strategic locations of a new National System of Logistics Platforms.
With the passage of time, Mexico will become even stronger, so it is important to be prepared to be able to conduct business with companies from different parts of the world and as has already been mentioned on multiple occasions, it is not necessary to invest in infrastructure but one option is to outsource with experts. Something vital is that they can be part of your company and share the same vision towards success, as a true ally that will be throughout the process until achieving the goals,
