Despite the economic uncertainty experienced last year in Mexico, the automotive sector closed 2017 with

record figures

in both production and export; this shows how the sector is growing and for this 2018 the industry expects to increase those numbers, which brings benefits for all involved such as the logistics sector.

In the framework of the forum “Development of Value Chains in the Automotive Industry”, organized by the National Bank of Foreign Trade (Bancomext), the Undersecretary of Industry and Commerce of the Ministry of Economy, Rogelio Garza, stressed that Mexico has a

Strong, robust automotive industry,

and emphasized that Mexico is the seventh world producer of light vehicles, and in 2016 ranked number 12 in total automotive sales in the world.

Given the

strength of the industry,

SMEs are venturing into this competitive sector, such as the Puebla company Copemsa through its Zacua brand. There is no doubt that in Mexico there is room for new and better technologies, it is important to support Mexican companies to create and believe in our country.

 The automotive sector and logistics

The increase in the manufacture of vehicles in the country has had a positive impact on logistics, so ports have to adapt and make investments in cargo infrastructure that allow them to give a sufficient and satisfactory response.

A clear example is the port of Lázaro Cárdenas that increased the movement of automotive cargo by

24%

during the month of January, according   to the Integral Port Administration   (API).

For its part, Vantec Logistics considers Mexico one of the most important markets in the Americas for transport and packaging services.

This claim is supported by the arrival of luxury car manufacturers in Mexico, which requires greater complexity in terms of logistics and the supply chain.

“This is a logistical challenge for manufacturing and more so when you have a thousand seats available to you,” said Karl-Friedich Koch, Vice President of Production Control and Logistics at BMW’s Plant in San Luis Potosi.

In another section, Peter Koltai, Director of Logistics of Audi Mexico,

indicated that the company has plans to have greater digitalization in its production processes, which give way to what they call a smart factory.

This smart factory, which would be supported by a logistics control tower that has total visibility of the supply chain, would have automated processes for the feeding of auto parts, robotic solutions in its warehouses, infrared detection devices for trucks and autonomous in-plant transport.

As expected, 2018 is a complex year at the political and economic level at the national level, however, this will not stop the automotive industry that with all the above, demonstrates the strength it has in the face of a market that demands its products.

To achieve the task of the increase in the numbers of last year, the sector requires a logistics ally that can provide solutions not only transportation but integral solutions that cover any need it requires, being
