Why should continuous improvement be considered as a business differentiator?
In a constant search for differentiation, large companies not only explore the possibility of launching product variants, new services, developments focused on the end consumer, sustainable packaging, strategic alliances, promotional bundles, among others, to stand out is the premise, selling more is the priority.
Other companies have also sought to professionalize internally in search of excellence in quality, which is then transferred externally.
One such search determines and selects opportunities for improvement and implements the necessary actions to meet customer requirements and increase customer satisfaction. Today, process improvement aimed at delivering quality for many companies is that key differentiator; continuous improvement in particular.
The concept of continuous improvement is understood as a constant effort to improve all the processes of a company. Based on the idea that a permanent flow of small improvements, executed uninterruptedly, will have transforming results, the modern company is putting specific interest in it and transfers it to each and every one of its collaborators.
How to implement a continuous improvement process?
There are several postulant thinkers of methods and practices who agree on an essence of involvement and execution, of and with the collaborators who will make possible the change and the functioning of the new processes, however, it is important to choose a method adequate to the industry to which the company and business model belong.
Some of these methods are:
- Kaizen Method:
- 5’s Method
- Poka Yoke
- Lean manufacturing
- PDCA Cycle
- Kan Ban
- Sig Sixma
An example of implementing continuous improvement in a company in the logistics sector, is a certification of the ISO 9001-2015 type, in which the regulation marks the interested companies that the objective of implementing continuous improvement beyond complying with the requirement, is to increase the possibilities of satisfying customers by identifying areas that are susceptible to be improved.
Improvement must be an unequivocal commitment of the top management, since they are the ones who must become aware of this reality, in order to be able to transmit this commitment to the rest of the company or organization.
But what guarantees that an implementation of this type of improvement will generate commercial value for the company?
Continuous improvement is based on identifying deviations, non-compliance with requirements, or as they are technically called “non-conformities”. Once these deviations have been defined, there is the possibility of applying corrective actions to correct the nonconformities.
What has an impact on the improvement of processes is when the cause of the non-compliance is addressed or solved and its management prevents it from happening again.
Continuous improvement is one of the most important requirements in any management system.
For example, in the production area, they will be responsible for designing, developing, producing and delivering goods and services in accordance with customer needs and expectations. In order to contribute to continuous improvement, the production process will have to see: The requirements and quality objectives of the products and/or services. Processes, documents and physical resources needed by employees. Los mecanismos de supervisión, inspección o auditoría. The standards control the creation and storage of production records.
